Cisco 8945 phones will not work with LLDP

We have a mixture of 7900 and 8945 series phones and using the LLDP discovery protocol. When testing the phones we found the 7900 series works fine but the 8945 phones are having issues. We conducted a packet capture and found the 8945 phone is getting the LLDP request, but not joining the voice VLAN 20. Traffic from phones are staying on VLAN 10 (default native VLAN) Problem is with 8945 phones only. Customer is using non-Cisco switches Fortinet. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there

Cisco 8945 supports LLDP.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/8941_8945/10_0/english/admin_guide/P415_BK_AA30369C_00_adminguide-8941-8945-10_0.pdf

May be you are hitting the bug CSCub98603

https://bst.cloudapps.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCub98603/?rfs=iqvred

Symptom:
IP Phone 8945 using sip firmware doesn't communicate in the proper VLAN.

Conditions:
When the following conditions are met:
- using third party switches with LLDP enabled or Cisco switches with CDP disabled and LLDP enabled
- the phone is configured to use both LLDP and CDP

Workaround:
Disable CDP and reset the phone using the call agent. For example in the CUCM Administration pages disable "Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP): Switch PortRequired" on the phone configuration page.

Try the above workaround. If that doesnt work match the config as explained in the below link. Then try upgrading the firmware of the phones.

Hope this helps!

Cheers
Rath!

Hi

I was looking at cisco unified ip phone 9841 and 8945 guide. https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/8941_8945/10_0/english/admin_guide/P415_BK_AA30369C_00_adminguide-8941-8945-10_0.pdf.

One the protocols used is LLDP.

But I also saw LLDP-MED (Link Layer Discovery Protocol-Media Endpoint Devices). One of the things this does is communicate information such as Voice VLAN CONFIGURATION.

Have you done a packet capture to search for this?
