Connecting a printer to the pc port of a Cisco phone

Hello there,

Someone is the office asked about connecting a printer to the pc port of an IP phone (7941).  I can't find anything on Cisco's web site that gives guidance for this.  We plugged the printer to the pc port of the phone and tested it - we were able to print docs and pdfs so it appears to work but it doesn't appear to be a Cisco standard.   Does anyone have any experience with this kind of odd request?

Thanks,

katberts

For 79XX you should be fine. In 99XX models we sometime see problems depending on the NIC speed negotiated on the phone that the phone might reboot. However with proper configuration you can fix this. 79XX are usually not affected by the device that is connected to the PC port.

Ofcourse it will work because the phone is a single port switch too but that's not it is meant for. That switch inside the phone is for Daisy Chaining the PC.

You can connect any kind Ethernet device to the phone port, without having any issue. Cisco doesn't dictate any standard in that.

That's good to know others have hooked printers into the pc port of a 79xx phones and not had problems.  I know it's uncommon, obviously, since I could find no information on the web regarding it but I knew if I came here someone would know!!!!

Thanks guys!

usually our phone line takes two vlans voice and Data. if you provice the Data vlan to the perticuler port and your whole netwok is with the same ip schema, off couse the pritner will work.

one day i have no data vlan for net but customer want to conect pc thorugh ip phoen to access the net. I just add a WIFI to the vlan and that Vlan i add to the phone and the net works. this means you can do any thing to the phone port consider it as a swithc port.
