CUCM Upgrade Paths from 7.1.2 to 8.5.x

Hi,

It seems like each time I do a major version upgrade of CUCM, I spend numerous hours trying to figure out my upgrade paths.  Each link I click on the cisco site seems to point me to the same few documents and I dont get my answer.  I thought I would post a question to see if I can cut down on that time.

We're currently on MSC7816H3-K9-CMB1 hardware (Pub and Sub) with 160 GB drives, and I can only assume it was shipped with 2GB RAM.  Our version of CUCM is 7.1.2.2199-5 and we'd like to get to version 8.5.x (whichever the newest is).  I remember reading a document that expains we should be running 4GB RAM when using 8.0(3) through 8.5 when using 7816 hardware.

See here:  http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6790/ps5748/ps378/prod_brochure0900aecd8062a4f9.html

I figured I would need to get to 7.1.5 first, then go from there so I downloaded the following file:  cmterm-devicepack7.1.5.33052-1.cop.sgn.  I do this so rarely that I'm guessing this is the wrong file.  Do I need the LOCALE file (English) instead?

After I get to 7.1.5, what's next?  Can I skip to 8.5 or do I have to go to 8.0 first?  Very confused on this process, again.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Rory,

You are most correct here, there is no "direct" path from 7.1(2) to 8.5(1)

Installation Instructions

NoteApply this Service Update to all of your Cisco Unified Communications Manager servers, beginning with the publisher server and TFTP server.
Refer to the “Software Upgrades” section of the Cisco Unified Operating System Administration Guide for detailed instructions on “Software Upgrade and Installation.”

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/cucos/7_1_2/cucos/iptpch7.html

NoteBecause the 7.1.3.32900-4 build is a nonbootable ISO, it proves useful only for upgrades. You cannot use it for new installations.

Because of its size, the UCSInstall.iso file, UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso, comprises two parts:
•UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso_part1of2
•UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso_part2of2

Prior to installation these two parts must be combined into a single file using the procedures documented below.
Step 1From www.cisco.com, download the two UCSInstall files.
Step 2Combine the two files using one of the following methods:

Linux
If you have a Unix/Linux system, the two parts can be combined with this command:
cat UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso_part1of2 UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso_part2of2 > UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso

Windows
If you have a Windows system, cut and paste the following command from this document into the command prompt (cmd.exe) to combine the two parts:
COPY /B UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso_part1of2+UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso_part2of2 UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso
Step 3Use an md5sum utility to verify that the MD5 sum of the final file is correct.
The MD5 for this download is: d450666dafbc8f01c111ed0158f748fb

Step 4Install the Service Update file: UCSInstall_UCOS_7.1.3.32900-4.sgn.iso

NoteApply this SU to all of your Cisco Unified Communications Manager servers, beginning with the publisher server and TFTP server.
Refer to the “Software Upgrades” section of the Cisco Unified Communications Operating System Administration Guide, Release 8.5(1) for detailed information about doing this upgrade:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/cucos/8_5_1/cucos/iptpch7.html

NoteBecause the 8.5.1.11900-21 build is a non-bootable ISO, it proves useful only for upgrades. You cannot use it for new installations.
Release 8.5(1) is available in both restricted (which is the release type that has always been available from Cisco) and unrestricted versions of software to comply with import / export restrictions to various countries. The unrestricted version is available in limited markets. Please refer to the 8.5(1) Release Notes referenced above for a more detailed description.

The file names and MD5 values you will use for this upgrade are:
•UCSInstall_UCOS_8.5.1.11900-21.sgn.iso_part1of3
•UCSInstall_UCOS_8.5.1.11900-21.sgn.iso_part2of3
•UCSInstall_UCOS_8.5.1.11900-21.sgn.iso_part3of3

Hi Rob,

Thank you for the information and clarification!  Very helpful.  At what point would I need to add my licensing?  I'm under the impression I would need to move from 7.x to 8.x.  Does it allow for a grace period after upgrade, or should I obtain the license files beforehand?

We will start planning a rollout within the next week or so.  Thank you very much.
