What does * do when it is part of a directory number, we have some with 2*XXX and some with *XXXXX

I personally haven't seen many numbers with * that do not use * as the first digit, but I've seen a few here and there.

But *something are commonly used as service numbers internally, or sometimes as short dials for commonly used numbers in a company.

 

If you're asking about your specific case and what they do in your system, you need to look at your config to find that out.
