MGCP Process hung - how to kill process?

          Hi All,

I did a no MGCP on a 3725 and its been about half an hour.

When I go back and do mcgp it says

r-fwvpn02-il#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z.
r-fwvpn02-il(config)#mgcp
%MGCP-SHUTTING-DOWN, Cannot restart MGCP until it is finished shutting down

Is there a way to kill this process?

This is on my WAN router so I dont want to reboot the box.

Thanks All!

Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a way to kill a single process using PID in IOS.  I've heard debate on one side or the other but for MGCP, SCCP, etc...when they hang, the result (even after TAC case sometimes) is that a reboot is the workaround/fix.  Schedule some downtime and reboot is your best bet from my view.

There is no way I am aware to kill the process, but usually it is hanging because there are active mgcp ports off hook. If you do a sh voice port sum, look for off hook ports and go and make them admin down. I just had this happen to me, I shut down 2 ports that were off hook and mgcp shut down. Or of course, you can reload the router.

This actually worked for restarting the mgcp proccess without a router reload.

Thank you.

worked right away, thank you.  (vg420-144fxs)

It looks like you are running into the BUG below

https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCej32039/?reffering_site=dumpcr

Unfortunately there is not workaround that you can do to restart the MGCP stack, you will have to reload the gateway.

Hi JB,

thanks for sharing the bug[+5]

I checked but this bug is not publicly available.

Hi Aman,

it looks like the BUG was not documented correctly, i have pasted the content for details.

Symptoms: Once the mgcp command was shut down by
configuring the no mgcp, it cannot be
restarted by the mgcp command. The router has
to be reloaded to restart the mgcp command.

Conditions: This symptom has been observed when the
mgcp command was shut down by configuring the
no mgcp command.

Workaround: There is no workaround

Is this any router IOS specific?

Aman,

It was first reported in 12.X train, but i can see it been reported on higher versions also.

SDR_Lab(config)#mgcp
%MGCP-SHUTTING-DOWN, Cannot restart MGCP until it is finished shutting down

In this case, you have to look for any hung ports, make them admin down and then resetting MGCP will work

SDR_Lab(config)#no mgcp
SDR_Lab(config)#mgcp
