Migration from CUCM11.5 Unrestricted to CUCM12.5 Restricted

Hi All,

I find myself in the position where I need to migrate a customers CUCM cluster from the unrestricted version (11.5) to the restricted version, and upgrade to 12.5.

I know DRS and PCD are not options for this scenario, which leaves me with 2 choices. BAT Export/Import, or manual config.

Does anyone know whether the BAT Export/Import files structure changed between 11.5 and 12.5. ie, can I export from 11.5 and import into 12.5 without having to manipulate loads of data? Or would it be safer to build a new 11.5 restricted version, do the import then upgrade to 12.5?

Any help or real life experience of this would be much appreciated.

BAT Export/Import will work from 11.5 to 12.5.

In my experience it will not work without a major effort with manipulation of the export data to be able to import. This do not even work straight off within the same version for many configuration elements.

@g-kennett Are you sure that DRS is out of scope? That would definitely be your best option if it works.

Hi Roger,

Unfortunately, you cannot use DRS backup from unrestricted version and restore to a restricted version. So looks if you can't import straight from 11.5 to 12.5 without a lot of manipulating I will need to go to 11.5, then upgrade after.

However, @Nithin Eluvathingal believes it is possible so I am going to test this in our labs.

in your  case  PCD and DRS will not work and only option is import/export . Instead of spending time importing to 11 and upgrading to 12 it will be better if you complete it in one step.

Two years back i did a migrations from 8 to 12 with export/import. i don't remember any major issues i faced when doing import .

i am installing a 12.x version on my lab and once finished i will try importing from 11 and will provide more information.

Best option go with the same version and upgrade to 12.X.

import tested  on 12.5 using 11.5 export completed with errors.

1. phone import failed due to device pool SEP501CB07612E7 SOS_DP is not a valid devicepool
2. The device import failed due to CUCM  group null (Record Number 1) SOSCUCMGP is not an existing fkcallmanagergroup
3. Call manager group failed due to SOSCUCMGP Missing key in referenced table for referential constraint (informix.fk_callmanagergroupmember_fkcallmanager).

Hi Nithin,,

Thanks for going through this and presenting the output. I'm not convinced that even if it was on the same version you could just import the whole export in one job. 

I will attempt this in the lab this week at some point. Hopefully it will prove me wrong.

Roger, the DRS documentation calls that out:

Export Restricted

You can restore the DRS backup from a restricted version only to a restricted version and the backup from an unrestricted version can be restored only to an unrestricted version. Note that if you upgrade to the U.S. export unrestricted version of Cisco Unified Communications Manager, you will not be able to later upgrade to or be able to perform a fresh install of the U.S. export restricted version of this software

The easiest path is BAT export/import on the same version, just as it was when migrating from a BE 5K to a non 5K CUCM (due to DRS having the same limitation, a 5K backup could only be restored on another 5K).
