Moving from 6.1.4 to 8.6 CCM

Hi,

Currently we have one publisher 6.1.4 CCM Server and we will move to the new two UCS servers (8.6). What is the best way to export the data to the new servers?

Hi

1) You will have to upgrade your CUCM 6.1.4 to CUCM 8.6

2) Take DRS backup

3) Install CUCM in UCs box

4) Do DRS restore.

But currently we have one ccm server won't it be very risky to move this server to 8.6 ?

Hi,

I dont think it will have much of the problem.

As we have direct upgrde form 6.1.4 to CUCM 8.6. So you can keep DRS back up of CUCM 6.1.4 also and In case some thing goes wrong you can restore the DRS backup.

This gives you clarity on whether you can upgrade to 8.6 on the physical server (depends on the server model) directly or if you need to do that on the UCS server instead as the MCS server doesn't support 8.6.

Hi,

Not sure why you got that error. Anyways, as for your question, I dont see why you would want to use the old MCS server as well as the New UCS servers at the same time once the migration is complete. The thing is, you would need to perform the upgrade on the MCS server or a bridge upgrade, take a backup using DRS, do a fresh install of 8.6 (same version) and restore the DRS backup onto it.

The documents I provided above are very important to go through for a successful migration.

I'm glad I could help!

You can use the old servers, however, it is not recommended to use different hardware for the same UCM cluster. You can always use the servers to build a seperate UCM cluster and integrate it using ICT/SIP trunks.

Maybe another way to move to new server is:

Install two new UCS servers.

Get user/phone data from old server and insert them to new server.

But in this way I think we have to manually add sip/h323 gateways and media resources and there will be a lot of manul jobs.

What do you think about that? Does it worth it?

Hi,

If you're looking at manually configuring the new CUCM installs on the UCS servers, then it will be plenty of work and lengthy process. I would not do it unless I had no other option. The routine procedure which majority of engineers follow is to upgrade existing MCS server(s) to the new version, take a DRS backup, build the same version on the UCS servers, restore the DRS backup, validate the configs, registrations, dbreplication, etc. This is generally best to schedule a MW over the weekend just in case you need to roll back to the MCS servers incase of any issues.

Yes, there will be a lot of work. It's certainly possible if you have the experience and patience, but the DRS route is much easier to implement, and validate...

What I have done so far:

Installed two ESXi, and UCM (cluster) to new two UCS servers. The servers are ready now except the licences. Do you have anything to tell about licenses?

Now currently I'm using only one server and there is no cluster. But I have new ucs server ccm in cluster. When will I take backup from MCS and restore to publisher UCS server what will happen to the subscriber node?
