POE is IOS dependant or Hardware Dependent

HI,

I just wanted to know, if the Power Over Ethernet (POE) is base on the IOS or is dependent on the hardware?? i have 3550 series Cisco Switches and wanted to know if i can enable POE over them???

Kindly Help me with your suggestion.

POE is hardware and software dependent, but any hardware with POE capabilities should be running IOS to support it.

The PoE functionality is primarily Hardware based. Have a look at the following list for the 3550, and note the ** for the PoE supported version;

The Cisco Catalyst 3550 Series Intelligent Ethernet Switches include the following configurations:

Catalyst 3550-24 Switch-24 10/100 ports and two Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC)-based Gigabit Ethernet ports; 1 rack unit (RU)
