help -> for this page
can give you the info of any field you need and sometimes is easier than looking into info from CCO, learn how to use that resource:
Enter a string of alphanumeric characters.
Cisco Unified Communications Manager uses the digest credentials that you specify here to validate the credentials that the phone offers during digest authentication. The digest credentials that you enter in this field get associated with the phone when you choose a digest user in the Phone Configuration window.
Note : For more information on digest authentication, refer to the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Security Guide.

One purpose that I know of is 3rd party SIP Phones do not register to call manager by MAC Address like normal Cisco SCCP devices would. They register with a Digest username and password and this is where you tie a Digest Username to a device for Directory Number info and such.
This has been the only time I have ever populated that value.

Absolutely correct. If you purchase other SIP IP phones for your offices that you need to build and register with your CUCM network, you need to use digest credentials for these ( non Cisco ) phone types. One thing to note....the new phone will often have a web interface. Read the documentation carefully to find a link the new phone will send you to. This will often bring up a page that it gets from the phone type. Once this GUI comes up you will see all the info on the phone you need to add it to the CUCM properly.
