Hi there,
I have CUCM 8.6 cluster and do have a PSTN SIP Trunk for the outgoing calls. At the moment I have 100 channels. I would like to know how can I check the maximum no of of concurrent channels being utilized at single point of time so that I can take certain actions accordingly.
In connection with this I also would like to tell, we do have Cisco Unified Operations Manager suite as well.
Let me know the best possible way so that I can figure out the maximum no of SIP Trunk channels being utilized simultaneously. I need to know if I can get this detail on historical basis i.e weekly or monthly. .
I would appreciate expert responses on this thread.

As far I know, SIP trunks do not utilize the concepts of channels. Channel utilization is in the TDM world. SIP trunks utilizes bandwidth. Your provider will give you a bandwidth allocation based on what you have agreed in the contract.

Thank you for your response!
Yes you are right in a way. Well, it all depends on the Service Provider, the way they are offering services. Here, they do provide in both ways either bandwidth or channels ( when I say channels it means they have allocated standard bandwidth per session ). So, Our company have purchased the channels for Incoming and Outgoing PSTN Calls.
So, if you could know how to find the maximum channels utilization in this respect, kindly share.

Your sip trunk provider has most likely provisioned your service with a pre-stated number of sessions rather than trunks. They may be able to provide the reporting you're after. There may be rtmt counters you could check as well. For a reliable long term reporting mechanism I'm at a loss though. Maybe some snmp object you could monitor?

Well Yes. Its an ITSP SIP Trunk with stated no of channels/sessions. I would need to check with them if they may provide me that sort of info which I highly doubt, as for business reasons they may not would want to provide that much specific detail or they may start charging for this kind of service. Well, I wil talk to them and see what they have to say.
On RTMT, yes I have already created a counter for Calls in Progress that shows the no of active call at given time but that shows me in real time, you know. I want to get that information on historical basis as well like weekly or monthly through CDR or through Cisco Operation Mgmt Suite( that I already have).
So, as per above shared information, do you think we could find that through that management suite or whatever the best possible way to find maximum simultaneous sessions. by the way, I am at lost as well

You could make use of the axl/serviceability API and query that counter, storing the data, and creating your reports from that data. Kind of hokey but with rtmt open I believe you can log those counters to a local file also.
I'm not familiar with the management suite you mentioned so I can't speak to that but I'm sure someone else can.

Just thinking on another note, what about finding some specific counters in RTMT. I was thinking if we could have MIB enabled for the required statistics then can we possibly check it ??
I dont know how but if you guys have any ideas kindly do share..

Hi Muhammad,
Just went through this thread and your latest question - how to check the utilization of your SIP trunk. I've attached a screenshot from RTMT where you can go to monitor the number of active calls on a specific SIP trunk.
Additional Details about the counter:
Object: Cisco SIP
Counter: CallsActive
Desc: This represents the number of calls that are currently active (in use) on this SIP device.
HTH.

Harmit.

Thanks Harmit for taking some time in to responsd.
Well, yes that what i am currently doing with RTMT counter for Real time basis. I would like to know if we could figure out the incoming and outgoing channels utilization.

We have obtained similar statistics in the past but that can only b provided by your SIP provider. It should be part of the service or you may need to pay for it..It is worht finding out. The statistics they provided for us gave us a history of call usage on a monthly basis. I am not sure you can get this from RTMT or any other counter...Infact our sip provider gave this to us in a graphical form, so we saw how many calls our CUBE was dealing with on a monlty basis...

thanks for that clue that we can log the counter in the local file in csv format.
I believe what I am monitoring is number of active calls at any given time through that trunk. I would like to know if we could figure out the incoming and outgoing channels utilization. Let me know if you have any thought to share.

I'm not aware of a way to do that Muhammad. Maybe a CDR utilization report? I don't currently have any SIP trunks that I can check against though. If that works, then you might not need to track the RTMT counters.
Maybe someone else can speak to whether CUOM can address this.

Hi Muhammad,
I don't know if this would help but you could try this to track your utilization. It's based off of your CUCM CDR and tracks the number concurrent calls during a timeframe. Track your device being used whether it's PRIs or MGCP or SIP Trunks. - see screenshot:
It's called Variphy Insight. You can find them online via Google, and ask for a free trial. Mention you found them via the Cisco Support Forum and they'll extend the 15-day trial license to a 90 day trial.

Chris
