Two things i know about hardware MTP's.
Hardware MTP's will be used where you need transrating , in case p time mismatch between two ends .If one side uses 20 ms and other is on 10 ms pactatization .Most likely the cases where you have third party vendor or SP which doesn't support 20 ms.
Also Hardware MTP will utilize your DSP resources so if you have enough of them you can configure HW otherwise go with SW as you can configure more session based on the hardware specs.
