A customer has been wondering if there is a way to set his headset, a Plantronics savi 740, as the default audio device for his phone, a Cisco 7821. He has a lifter on his phone so the handset comes off of the hook automatically when he takes his headset off of the base. But, he doesn't hear dialtone from the headset until pressing the headset mode button on the phone itself. Is there anything that can be done in the phone settings to have the device recognize the headset as the audio device when the phone comes off of the hook?

You have the headset connected wrong. If you're using a classic lifter then the headset plugs into the handset port.
If using an Electronic Hookswitch Cable - which is by far a better approach - you use the headset port as well as the Aux port for the EHS serial cable. In that setup the headset base station is told about line state (e.g. Ringing, on/off-hook) and can control the phone by answering or hanging up in headset mode. The EHS cable is an extra part number that you need to order from the headset manufacturer.

I have similar prolem, everything works well, until phones are restarted ( no electricity or POE switch rebooted). I was wondering is there a parameter that tells IP phone - default is headset mode.
