IPv6 Migration

Hi,

I want to run IPv6 in our network. We have around 200K subscribers and their CPE doesn't support IPv6 mostly. Can we use NAT for this network? Which solution is the best? For CPEs which supports IPv6 I think we have to use dual stack, am I right?

Ali,

Dual stack is certainly the wisest choice.

You should move away from having IPv4 only nodes in the network. But for the time being several transition mechanisms exists. ISATAP is increasingly popular.

I would also suggest avoding NATs in any form, they typically are a nice idea as a workaround but typically stay with you forever and at some point you cannot think/live without them. :-)

You should run dual stack at the CE sides, If you dont have the right hardware, then it would be better to look for a hardware that support IPv6.

I dont recommend using NAT, although its possible using NAT64 or NAT-PT for example to have connectivity between IPv6 to an IPv4.

NAT has a lot of drawbacks for certain applications, its therfore not a recommended solution. just try to run dual Stack.
