MPLS router is sending packets with wrong tag

Level 1

Hello,

I am setting up MPLS LAB with 3xP routers and 3xPE. When I am sending the traffic from one P router to Lopback interface of the PE router P router is tagging a wrong label. (OSPF is used as internal IGP)

See the picture.

Configuration follows:

R20 (P router - CISCO892W)

R6 (P router - CISCO892W)

R13 (P router - CISCO892F)

R11 (PE router - CISCO2811)

Here is the MPLS forwarding info for above routers

According to MPLS forwarding information if I am pinging from R20 to R11 lo ip address 1.0.0.11

R20

it should tag the packets with outgoing label 19 however it is not doing it it is tagging 18 for some reason:

Can you please advise why the tag given is wrong from R20 and R6?

I have reloaded routers several times as well as issues no mpls ip and mpls ip for fresh LDP bindings but still no change (lable IDs are different but R20 and R6 always sending wrong lable and it is always forwarding table value minus 1 - in above example it is 18 19-1)

Please advise.

I have already attached part of Visio screenshot  this post

Robert

Seems like you are having a routing loop. you trace from R20 seems to be looping between two devices.

3 10.1.13.13 [MPLS: Label 18 Exp 0] 0 msec 0 msec 0 msec
  4 10.1.13.6 4 msec 0 msec 0 msec

Could you please check your configuration. Also do check for any default or static routes which shouldnt be present.

COuld you also please share the below output:

- show mpls for 10.0.0.11

- show ip cef 10.0.0.11 det

- ping mpls ipv4 10.0.0.11 255.255.255.255

capture the first two commands from the core router and also from the PE router towards P router R20.

Thanks for your reply Vinit,

Correct it is looping and the reason it is doing it the lable value that is sent from R20 to R13  the value is 18.

If you see the forwarding table of receiving router R13 it has next hop to R6 which on its own has a route back to R13 - that is why there is a loop

R13#sh mpls forwarding-table
Local      Outgoing   Prefix           Bytes Label   Outgoing   Next Hop
Label      Label      or Tunnel Id     Switched      interface
      16         Pop Label  1.0.0.20/32      126           Vl20       10.1.20.20
      17         Pop Label  10.1.6.0/24      0             Vl13       10.1.13.6
              Pop Label  10.1.6.0/24      0             Vl20       10.1.20.20
===18         Pop Label  1.0.0.6/32       28476         Vl13       10.1.13.6  ======
     19         Pop Label  1.0.0.11/32      0             Vl11       10.2.11.11

The question here is even if the forwarding table of R20 has the value 19 why it is sending with the value 18?

Forwarding table of R20:

R20#sh mpls forwarding-table
Local Outgoing Prefix Bytes Label Outgoing Next Hop
Label Label or Tunnel Id Switched interface
            21 Pop Label 1.0.0.6/32 0 Vl6 10.1.6.6
======22 19 1.0.0.11/32 0 Vl20 10.1.20.13
            23 Pop Label 1.0.0.13/32 0 Vl20 10.1.20.13
            24 Pop Label 10.1.13.0/24 0 Vl6 10.1.6.6
                 Pop Label 10.1.13.0/24 0 Vl20 10.1.20.13
           25 Pop Label 10.2.11.0/24 0 Vl20 10.1.20.13

----------------

Trace sending with 18:

R20# trace 1.0.0.11
Type escape sequence to abort.
Tracing the route to 1.0.0.11

Hi,

Your CEF programming seems to be fine on R20. What do you see when you trigger a ping/trace from R10 for 1.0.0.11?.

Can you try configuring a new loopback address on R6 and ping/trace the new address from R20?. Can you check if the new one works fine or you are observing same issue?. If so, is it using the same label or different?.

-Nagendra

Thanks for response Nagendra,

Pinging from R20 the loopback of R1

R20#ping 1.0.0.1
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 1.0.0.1, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/1/4 ms
R20#trace 1.0.0.1
Type escape sequence to abort.
Tracing the route to 1.0.0.1
VRF info: (vrf in name/id, vrf out name/id)
1 10.1.6.6 [MPLS: Label 16 Exp 0] 0 msec 0 msec 4 msec
2 10.2.101.1 0 msec * 0 msec

To answer your question it works normally from R20

Let me try from R11

Ping succeeds but traffic from R6 during the path pas-through using IP rather then MPLS

R11#ping 1.0.0.1

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 1.0.0.1, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/1/4 ms
R11#
R11#
R11#trace 1.0.0.1

Type escape sequence to abort.
Tracing the route to 1.0.0.1

====2 10.1.13.6 0 msec 4 msec 0 msec==
3 10.2.101.1 0 msec * 0 msec
R11#

Tracing from R1 to R11  (loops again with the wrong tag/label number 18 in place of 19)

R1#ping 1.0.0.11

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 1.0.0.11, timeout is 2 seconds:
.....
Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)
R1#trace 1.0.0.11

Type escape sequence to abort.
Tracing the route to 1.0.0.11

For People who may be interested in solution.

Looks like Cisco 891 and 892 routers are not designed to be P or PE services. I have replaced them with 2811 and 2921s and same configuration worked fine. 891 and 892 are good for CPE services though.

Hope that helps to someone in saving time troubleshooting similar issue.
