Can MTU size be different in sending/returning sessions after being changed to the jumbo frame?

I am not a networking guy. 

We are in the process of changing MTU size to jumbo frames in hoping to speed up backups, because we thought backup usually use large amount of size of I/O's. However, we don't see obvious improvements. 

I know MTU size can be changed, but my question is:
Can it be different in different sessions, or can it be different in the sending and returning process after changed to jumbo frame? one size when sending, and the other in returning? Thanks!

yes can be possible with jumbo frames, subject to device support. check the device documentation for jumbo support.
