Free Tool - www.mrtg.org or there are plenty of other licensed software packages like from Crannog or StatScout.

Hi,
I am using MRTG But it's not solving my problem.
I want to monitor ipsec/crypto based vpn.
I have created VPN'S in my pix firewall where i am using it's outside ip as a source for the remote side.
When i run mrtg it only shows the interface utilization.
I want to monitor how much bandwidth an individual vpn is consuing..
Is there anything we can do in the MRTG, or any other good free tool if not free then atleast evaluation.
Your quick reply will help me a lot...
Thanks,
Irshad

You need to look at the specific MIBS for IPSEC to see if you can get the information you require via SNMP.
Out of the box MRTG only measures octetsin and out on a given interface, however it CAN be used to graph any SNMP value by amending the config files and adding the relevant OIDs.
If you find the OID, i can point you in the right direction on how to configure MRTG
I use MRTG to measure the number of simultaneous users dialed into our RAS router, CPU utilisation on routers, free and busy memory on routers, etc..

Paddyxdoyle,
I am intersted in your mrtg config for monitoring other parameters than bandwidth. Would you mind sending me an example of how you are using MRTG to monitor CPU, dialed in users, etc? I am thinking this might be a great free tool to monitor our IP Telephony gateways, etc...
Thanks

Have a look at this page :
http://www.somix.com/support/mrtg_repository.php
It has a bunch of templates for mrtg configs that poll a variety if things. It's a pretty handy collection...

If uou need to monitor the traffic load on a router
interface I would suggest you MRTG.
There you will find all you need to know to setup
a server to collect the info from the routers.
bye,
Marco.

Google for MTRG, else look at something expensive like Concord or SMARTS.

If you want a good tool at a good price I suggest using Solarwinds Orion. A very nice product without a big price tag.

Crannog Netflow Tracker is the tool for this, it needs a little bit of setup but it has saved me weeks of troubleshotting WAN links.
It allows you to look deep inside your WAN traffic to see by destination ports, ip address, server conversations and a lot more. It uses a Cisco feature on every router or switch to infork in realtime traffic.

May I all point you in the direction of by far the most impressive and easily configured version of MRTG that I have come across. This is an all in one bundle for windows which auto installs perl, routers2cgi, rrdtool etc.... Basic configuration consists of creating a host file and thats it! Tweaks can be made once you have completed your first discovery.
Installation and configuration instructions here:
http://bmonday.com/articles/692.aspx
Software found here (and its free with no limitations):

I assure all MRTG users they will never look back once they have used this version.
