10G SFP+ with OM1

We all know that OM1 cable supports 10G up to 33m. What's the case if the distance exceeds 33m? will the link operate below 10G or it will not work at all? is there a chart showing the speed changes with different distance?

The reason I am asking is the client has OM1  and doesn't have budget to install OM3. Wondering if they can use OM1 for now with reduced link performance then upgrade fiber to OM3 later to support 10G fully.

Generally speaking, 10 Gbps links either operate at 10 Gbps or not at all.

As you exceed the recommended distance for your physical media, you may see an lowering in link reliability (link or protocol up/down flapping) and/or errors when you are right at the edge of viability.

It may operate just fine at 11, 12 even 20 m - depending on the actual loss characterisitics of your spans. However if there's a patch that's even a little bit loose or a fingerprint smudge on a connector end you may lose the link.

SFP+ module connected with OM1 will only perform well within 33m. if exceed the distance, you will get no link.

Hi,

I think you should upgrade fiber to OM3 or OM4 when the link distance exceeds 33m.

The Cisco 10GBASE-SR Module supports a link length up to 33m on MMF(OM1). 

Using 2000MHz*km MMF (OM3), up to 300m link lengths are possible.

Using 4700MHz*km MMF (OM4), up to 400m link lengths are possible.

They won't work once the distance exceeds their maximum transmission distance.

Hi,

The 10G-SR sfp will not work.

 You should use the 10G-LRM sfp module coupled with mode-conditioning patch cables for distances up to  220m on OM1/OM2 MMF fibre.
