ATA-186 firmware

Will the ATA-186 accept a firmware level higher than v2.16? When I look at the sample config that comes with the v3.0 firmware the top of the page says ATA-188.

I have tried to upgrade 2 ATA's from v2.16.1 and both have died in the process. The IVR stated that the upgrade was sucessfull, but on reboot they never came back.

I now have an RMA unit that I want to flash, but am somewhat reluctant.

Please advise.

Thank you,

Jamie Jensen

We have upgraded ATA-186 units to 3.0 firmware because we needed the FSK/caller-ID based message waiting indicator feature. It went quickly and flawlessly, at least with CallManager SCCP loads.

We've not had great luck with the little DOS utility for some reason, but I haven't spent a lot of time with it and haven't needed to. If you're using CallManager and you're already on a SCCP load, all you need to do is copy the loads into the TFTP directories on each cluster server (each one acting as a TFTP server, that is, if not all of them are). Then from CallManager, change the device load on the ATA-186 phone device or the default device load for ATA-186 under the System menu. They'll upgrade themselves automatically, just as the 7900 series phones do.

If you're using H.323 or other loads, I believe you do need to use the DOS utility, or alternately set up a TFTP server. Try using the TFTP method if the DOS utility method has been breaking down for you. I'm sure you've seen this before, but here's some documentation on the upgrade procedure just in case.

Thanks for the clues.

What has worked so far is that I used the 2.16 which is MGCP and SCCP combined. After I loaded that version of frimware I was able to get connected to the CallManager. I was also using the dus utility and haven't tried the TFTP directories.

BTW is SCCP the default load for the ATA's and how can I tell which is being used H.323, SCCP, SIP or MGCP?

I guess I got some bad ATA's the first time around.

I was thinking that the 3.0 firmware may not work in the ATA 186, but if you've loaded the 3.0 firmware that blows my theory out of the water.

Oh, well, I'll chalk it up to gremlins.

Thanks again,

Jamie Jensen

We have all of our ATA-186's here on 3.1.0 SCCP using the TFTP upgrade method - it is definitely the way to go :-)
