I am in the process of replacing one callmanager subscriber server with a new subscriber server. Unfortunately the problem I am having is that we are currently at 4.02A on the subscriber but I only have the 4.01 install CD's and the 4.02A upgrade exe file I downloaded from CCO. If I try to load the 4.01 cd's on the new subscriber it tells me the publisher is the wrong version, if I try the 4.02A version it tells me the file is for upgrades only. Do I need to request a full version of 4.02A be sent out? Does the product upgrade tool now send 4.02A? Or is there a way I can load 4.01 or 4.02A on the subscriber with the images I now have?

I think you might have an unfortunate case of "that sucks". The same type problem happened for a few months back when 3.3(4) was released as an upgrade on CCO but 3.3(3) was still the shipping release, and the same with 3.2(3) versus 3.2(2c), etc.
4.0(2a) install media is not released to manufacturing yet. I was shown a presentation by one of Cisco's channel SEs and I believe it was going to be RTM in mid-September? I'll drop him an e-mail and try to confirm. Anyway, I believe that new orders and SASU contract entitlements through the Product Upgrade Tool are still being fulfilled with 4.0(1).
I don't know if there's a way to install a 4.0(1) subscriber into a 4.0(2a) cluster. With previous versions, there have been hacks you could put in place to fool the DC Directory version check, which would let you get away with installing older 3.3(x) servers into a newer 3.3(x) cluster. I'm not sure if this works with 4.0(x), but if the error you're getting is based on a DC Directory version mismatch, there might be some hope. I would check with TAC on this.

I had the same issue, the version hack will not work you will have to re-image. Or wait for the media kit.

Jason,
Any news from Cisco SE as to when CCM 4.0(2a) would be available on CD, I am having the same problem.
Thanks,
Tarun

From what I hear it is available and shipping now, but I have yet to receive my copy. If you need it right away though open a TAC case and they should be able to copy the 2 ISO images for the 2 callmanager cd's. You can use your OS discs from 4.01 and downlaod any other updates you need.

I ran into this same issue. I had upgraded the publisher from 3.3(3) to 4.0(1) with 4.0(1) media and then brought it to 4.0(2) with the maint upgrade from CCO. I was then unable to upgrade the subscriber with the same media. I found that I was able to perform the upgrade successfully with 4.0(1) media if I changed these two registry keys on the publisher:
Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Cisco Systems, Inc.\CallManager\Build (Change value from 4.0(2)a to 4.0(1))
Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Cisco Systems, Inc.\Directory Configuration\IntegratedInstallVersion (Change value from 4.0.1.2 to 4.0.0.31)
For that second registry key you can verify what the value needs to be by looking at the following key which lists past directory versions:
Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Cisco Systems, Inc.\Cisco Directory Service
After the 4.0(1) upgrade completed I was then able to change those registry keys back to what they were and run the 4.0(2)a Maint Upgrade downloaded from CCO. This worked with no problems. Having the 4.0(2) media would have been much easier though.

Thanks for the info, however I was able to get the TAC to post ISO images of the new 4.0(2) media that I burned to cd and was able to use them to install the subscriber software.
