Is is possible to put a custom logo actually on the phone template for 7940 & 7960s? I know I can display a 'screensaver' with a logo, but you have to press Exit to see if you have any missed calls etc which isn't ideal.
If you can, can you have a different colour logo for 7970s?
Any tips'd be great.
Cheers,
NJ.

You can try with the latest firmware for IP phones

You can put background images on your TFTP server and configure the background list for your users to choose from. The instructions are on at the following link:

Cheers for the help. I'll give that a go.

I followed the procedure in the URL above, but when I check on the phone, it doesn't show the added image as an option. Is there sometime else that needs to be done for the image to show up as an option?

Unless something has changed recently:
You can use the idle url to display a custom logo which can be composed of text, custom softkeys, and pictures (special "cip" black/white images for 7940/7960 and color PNG images for 7970). You can have set the idle url as an enterprise parameter or on individual phones, so you can have color logos for your 7970's and CIP images for other phones (and some phones may not use the idle url at all, if you configure it that way).
However, as you noted there are limitations with this as you don't see your "missed calls" and have to exit the idle url service to see caller id on an incoming call.
In addition, you cannot just "start dialing" when an idle url is displayed - you have to exit the idle url first.
An additional link for changing the idle url:

Is it possible to use a COLOUR logo in the idle url, after conversion with the SDK (7970)?
If it is possible, please help me how can you do it... I can only use grayscale images....

Hi,
I don't see why you have to convert using the SDK for the 7970's.
The 7970's support PNG colour images for background picture, these have to be with a specific size, (320x212 pix for the picture, 80x53 pix for the thumbnail), and a limited palette of 4096 colors (12-bit).

where in the call manager do you indicate the IP Phones to download the image from the TFTP?
C:\Programfiles\Cisco\TFTPPath\Desktops\320x196x4
The logo is set up but the phones will not download the image even after reset.

Hi,
Look here for instructions: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/products_administration_guide_chapter09186a0080724691.html#wp1030672
Ensure taht you have the List.xml in the directory you mentioned. Also pay attention to the notes about having a backup copy of the files in the directory and caching new files in the tftp path.
The backgroung image is user selectable on the phone, by following this: Settings > User Preferences > Background Images. It does not load automatitialy on phone boot.
I find this also helpful: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps4625/products_tech_note09186a008062495a.shtml

In my experience with background image uploads through TFTP, the image will not appear in user options until the TFTP service is restarted.

On the 7940 and 7960 you can not have a backround. You can only put a screen saver.
This is the link with directions on how to create a backround:
