I am wondering of anyone has come across a black box or something like that that I can put on the newtwork and monitor the CallManager so that it can call a predetermined number in case of a failure kind of like the call home feature of a PBX.

Install NetIQ and it can be configured to Call, Page or mail when some/specific events occurs.
Also you can use the RTMT(free) which can only sent mails out.

Thanks, I was thinking of that as well as Prognosis. I was also trying to come up with a pc running a Linux kernel that would sit on the network and collect messages and then call out,
I did hear that there are such boxes out there but no one had names just thoughts.
I am also trying to figure out the cost to support day two. I am trying to figure out how much it will cost per phone.

Have you looked at the included Real Time Monitoring Tool (RTMT)? You need a mgt pc running it all the time, but it has been greatly enhanced in CCM 4.x (client-side apppication) and will send an email alert on the hundreds of Perfmon items monitored. Downside is that the management pc has to be running the client app for the alerts to be sent out, but it avoids any CCM co-res clients and the corresponding certification requirements.
Since it's an email it can go to email address, group list, SMS, or alpha-numeric pager.
Up side is that you send CCM alerts to the same address as Unity Event Log alerts.

We are installing Cisco ITEM IP telephony environment monitor.
We tried the demo, which you can download from Cisco, and we liked how it worked.
It also only sends email, but the only real problem we have is out SMTP pagers only except 80 characters, and you need more like 150 to understand the message.
