We have a H.323 VoIP link between two of our locations. We originally had problems with our fax machines using ATA-186 devices sending faxes between the two locations because of the G.729 codec being used. We have enabled Fax Relay on the routers between the two locations and are now able to fax successfully between the two locations but only on port 1 of the ATA. Any fax hooked to port 2 is still not completing the handshake. Any clues?

if you use g729, the 2nd port cannot be used for g729

Thanks for the response. Do you know this from experience or from reading it in some technical documentation?

Here is a link to the data sheet. Look for the tiny, tiny print at the very bottom:
1 In simultaneous dual-port operation, the second port is limited to G.711 when using G.729.

Thank you very much for your reply. I also did a lot of searching last night and found the same information in the ATA Analog Telephone Adapter Administrator's Guide (SCCP). Page 1-6 specifically says "When G.729 is used, only one FXS port cna use G.729."
I guess that answers and confirms my request. Thanks everyone. Time to buy a new ATA.
