Moving from Jabber to WebEx Cloud

I need some clarity on how to move from a completely on-premises CUC to WebEx cloud.

In very general terms, is WebEx a replacement for Jabber on steroids?

What hardware that we currently have can\will be moved to the cloud?
Call Manger Pub and Sub, UCCX Pub and Sub, Unity Connection, IM Presence server...

We have dedicated voice gateways (6) for our analog devices, fax (dozens) and patient analog phones (about 300). Analog dedicated voice gateways local at the hospital and at remote clinics

Can we run MGCP on our analog voice gateways and still use WebEx Cloud

I'm being told MGCP isn't compatible with WebEx cloud, and we have to use SIP on our analog voice gateways, is that true?

Thank you in advance!

Kelvin

Possibly there is a little bit of confusion on what this entails. Moving from Jabber to Webex is not much more than replacing one application with another. What will change from an infrastructure perspective is that the messaging and presence part will move from on-premises to the cloud. So you can sun set your CUPS infrastructure. Other than that there are no alterations to your existing system landscape. Anything you have now will remain as is.

Hi Roger,

It sounds like you're saying there's NO issue with using MGCP as the protocol for our On Prem vioce gateways we have dedicated to analog?

That is correct. The applications, Jabber or Webex, do not care one bit what protocol you use for your voice gateways. That said, most people have since long made the switch to use SIP as the gateway control protocol, simply because it's so much easier to work with than MGCP.

Hi Roger, It sounds like you're saying SIP is easier to manage than MGCP...

Based on our internal skill set, MGCP feels like it's easier to manage as we can use Call Manager verses CLI

It's a matter of preference and also other factors that would affect what configuration you'd need to have present in IOS. Like if you use SRST, then you would need to have a set of dial-peers present anyway, so why not go all the way. IMHO SIP is a lot easier to maintain, specifically if you look at it from a troubleshooting perspective. Reading the output for debugs of MGCP is far from easy, where as with SIP it's pretty much all there in clear text.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your input!

Back in the day when we talked about SIP and faxing, the idea then was to steer away from SIP for faxing and stick with PRI or POTs lines.

Is SIP on our voice gateway the same SIP our telecom carriers use?

We as an organization still have PRIs for faxing.
We do use SIP for voice.
