If anyone knows what a typical pbx system "sees" a link to Unity as, I would be grateful for an answer. I believe it is either a trunk, or a control line and a rs-232 link.

The way you connect the PBX to Unity is dependent on the type of PBX.
Unity supports some Dialogic analog cards and one T1 card.
