phone load 7.1.2 and sidecar 7914

The release notes state that the 7914 needs to be upgraded to code 4.0.1 prior to upgrading the 7940/60 to 7.1.2

Say, for instance the customer did not read that and loaded all his 7940/60's with 7.1.2 and now they have problems with the sidecar...

Can they just downgrade the code of the 7960 attached to the sidecar, upgrade the sidecar to 4.0.1 and then re-upgrade that attached 7960 to 7.1.2 ?

Don't worry Jim (I did the same thing) just download the sidecar image and install the package on the CM, reload the attached phone (try hard unplug and plug) and the new image should push down to the 7914.
