I am running Unified messaging at a customer site. If Exchange goes down, the UMR will allow Unity to stay up. I have been told this is for 24 hours. Is there actually a time limit, a directory size limit, a message limit, etc.? If there is a limit, can this be changed?

Not sure who told you it was limited for 24 hours but they are incorrect. There's no time limit at all for this.
The only limit you need to worry about is the space on the hard drive where the UnityMTA directory is that stores messages temporarily until Exchange comes back up. If this drive runs out of space we obviously can't take messages any longer. You can move this directory to another drive if you like using the Advanced Settings Tool - the "Change default location for UnityMTA directory" is the option you want. By default it's installed under the \commserver directory.
