I am working on upgrading the Unity server from 3.1(5) to 4.0(4), and wanted to know if this was a supported upgrade path, or if I would have to do the initial upgrade to 4.0(1), then go forward.

Yes, Unity 3.1(5) may be directly upgraded to Unity 4.0(4). See the following URL for more information:
