Bandwidth Distribution on VLANS

If you have a Layer3 switch and you have say 4 VLANS that you are doing heavy stress testing on, what are the constraints per VLAN? Basically is the backplane divided between the VLANS if they are all saturated or does the switch allocated bandwidth based on consumption?

It doesn't necessarily need to be a layer 3 switch, I am just curious about how the bandwith is allocated per VLAN based on the limits of the switch.

If you're not doing any type of QoS I'd imagine the switch just uses a "first come, first served" strategy to forward packets, regardless of VLANs. This is a guess, though.
