Anyone use the command to disabled this feature? What's the command? What's the procedure (boot ROM)? How long can the system run without causing damage? Immediate need to boot until high fan tray can be delivered.

AFAIK there is no way to bypass this requirement, and you'd be crazy to try. The Sup720 should boot up and run for 5 minutes. Beyond that and you are playing with fire, literally. These cards run hot, nearly 300 watts, double what a Sup2 requires.

Actually, I found the commands. I agree that you'd have to be crazy to implement. However, the commands are there for a reason. Fully populated chassis would probably guarantee system failure. Single sup and single module who knows? User beware indeed!

So do you really want to risk a 29000$ module, by disabling the fan requirement feature ?
09-22-2005 06:39 AM
Yesterday, I desperately needed it, no matter the risk $$$, because Cisco didn't have any high speed fan trays to RMA (unbelievable) due to the hurricane. Now that the issue has passed I'm curious what the impact is on the temparature readings. I'm hoping Cisco will chime in to give specifics. Maybe let me burn up one of their demos :o)

Todd, please drop me an empty email at snair@gdt.com
Thanks.

OK, I stand corrected on the commands. Could you post them? I run a lab and could possibly see what the actual temperature effects are.

The command is ALLOWANYFAN=1 in ROMMON. I did not have to use set to add variable, but use it to view. I'm not sure if it's case sensitive. I used all upper case and alarm indicators went out on sup module. Here's some log outout. Notice the temp rising. (The chassis powered down sup module after approx. 5 minutes without these commands. Notice the logg buff output warnings).

So did you have a regular fan tray (rather than the HS fan tray) in place ???
09-22-2005 12:32 PM
Yes. See Fan Tray 1 Version: 1.
09-22-2005 12:33 PM
Nevermind, I looked back at the sh env. cool output and it says W6k-SLOT-FAN which is the first gen fan tray.
Ignore my previous post.

Hi Todd,
Thanks for your post and sharing your knowledge but one last question. Can you please update me for how long did it worked without inserting high speed fan tray.
I mean for how long the chassis worked with W6k-SLOT-FAN.

Ankur
