Hello,
I have a supposed Cisco device somewhere that is not behaving nicely. I know it's MAC address. Could Cisco tell me what product it is ? (that would be a start, I sure hope it's not an AP ! )
Thanks,
Dave

There is no a way to tell what device it is just by MAC address

There should be a way. How does Cisco ensure that the MAC addresses used are unique ? They likely have some database for allocating MAC addresses. At a previous employer (Develcon Electronics) we sould tell the Model, Serial Number, Original Software, and Manufacturing date/issue number, all from a MAC address. I think that Cisco must record the MAC addresses used by manufacturing. I mean that someone has to tell Celestica or whoever what to burn ! Any ideas ?

Go to this website: http://standards.ieee.org/regauth/oui/index.shtml
and do a search for the MAC address. This will tell you the manufacturer of the device.
Another trick I've used is to block the IP address (if you know it) in an ACL and wait for your phone to ring.

If CDP is enabled on both sides you should get plenty of information on the device.

Hi, have you tried to trace the MAC address in your network and find the port to which it is connected?
