Hi Sir,
My customer bought a new Cisco Catalyst 6509 Switch with SUP720. We have just unpacked the box and powered it up and noticed it has very high CPU utilization (pls see attached file for output of "show proc"). There's nothing connected to the box yet.
It's Hybrid with the following software:
CatOS 8.2(2) Filename: cat6000-sup720cvk9.8-2-2.bin
IOS 12.2.17a-SX4 (ED) Filename: c6msfc3-pk9sv-mz.122-17a.SX4.bin (IP W/SSH Feature Sets)
Modules installed are a few 48-port 10/100/1000BASE-T and one FWSM.
Output Interpreter failed to analyze the output probably because it's newer CatOS version.
Can anyone please tell me what's wrong with the switch? If upgrade is necessary, what's the CatOS and IOS version?
Many thanks.
B.Rgds,
Lim TS

Can you paste couple snapshots of "sh proc cpu" rather than just "sh proc". The output between the 2 commands is different and the first one helps more.

Hi,
Attached is couple of snapshots of "show proc cpu".
FYI, I upgraded the CatOS from 8.2(2) to 8.3(4). Upgraded IOS from 12.2(17a)SX4 to 12.2(17d)SXB5. But problem still persists.
I don't see high CPU utilization when I do "show process cpu" on the MSFCs.
Please help.
Thank you.

Most of your CPU utlization is from the console process meaning it is because you are issuing commands on your console session. Also, you might notice 5% utlilization on IDLE_tasks and SlcpProcess which is normal for Sup720. Here is another similar thread for which I had answered
15-20% is normal. Here is an output from my lab Sup720
Console> (enable) sh proc cpu | exclude 0.0
CPU utilization for five seconds: 18.26%
one minute: 19.00%
five minutes: 19.00%
PID Runtime(ms) Invoked uSecs 5Sec 1Min 5Min TTY Process
--- ----------- ---------- -------- ------- ------- ------- --- ---------------
Console> (enable)
Console> (enable) sh ver | include Nmp
WS-C6506 Software, Version NmpSW: 8.3(4)
Console> (enable)

Hi,
Thanks for your informative response.
But my customer would like to see some Cisco notes that prove what you said is true. Do you have any?
Thank you.
