Trying to get DLSW+ to transport Netbeui from one Ethernet segment to another. This is a lab environment so I can freely mess with the configurations. On each Ethernet network there are two PCs running Netbeui. On each network the PCs can map to shares on the other PC on their network. The PCs cannot see the PCs on the other network although the routers have all the PC's Netbios names in their DLSW reachability displays.
The routers seem to peer with no problem. No circuits appear to have ever been build between the routers. I think I am missing something simple.
Here is a cut and paste of a partial router config.
!
dlsw local-peer peer-id 172.17.11.5 promiscuous
dlsw bridge-group 12
!
process-max-time 200

media-type 10BaseT
bridge-group 12
bridge-group 12 input-lsap-list 212
!
access-list 212 permit 0xF0F0 0x0101
Note that I have tried it with and without the access list.

I think the bridge-protocol is missing (ibm or ieee).

It was in the config, just not in the part that I cut and pasted.
bridge 12 protocol ieee

is it possible to show me the both configuration of the dlsw-routers?
01-14-2003 12:54 PM
Here are the sanitized configs for both routers.

If you see your DLSW peers, it is a pretty safe bet that DLSW is functioning properly. You might want to check on the following commands... I am not a NetBios expert, but it looks like they might be affecting what the router will forward.
no ip forward-protocol udp netbios-ns
no ip forward-protocol udp netbios-dgm

I have thought about those but I am only runing Netbeui and those commands appear to apply to Netbios over IP.
Thanks.

To troubleshoot your problem I recommend this page:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk331/tk336/technologies_tech_note09186a008009424a.shtml
Anyway, if you think there's no problem with routers, have you tried reconfiguring your PC's ?

Netbeui = Netbios Enhanced User Interface
"Data-link switching (DLSw) provides a means of transporting IBM Systems Network Architecture (SNA) and network basic input/output system (NetBIOS traffic over an IP network. It serves as an alternative to source-route bridging (SRB), a protocol for transporting SNA and NetBIOS traffic in Token Ring environments that was widely deployed prior to the introduction of DLSw. In general, DLSw addresses some of the shortcomings of SRB for certain communication requirements---particularly in WAN implementations. "
If this is a lab environment, I would suggest taking most everything out of the config except the bare minimum. Get the config to work and then start adding back in the pieces that are required for the production environment.
The config looks good and here is a link to help you confirm it...
You may consider an explicit peer statement rather than promiscious configuration. Unless you plan on building a whole lot of these type of connections to one hub peer.
