Implementation examples of L3 on a 4006 SupIII

I have two new 4006 switches. Our network is very flat (600 nodes). I bought the Layer3 switches instead of routers. I was told that I could implement Layer3 on an interface, change the workstations behind the interface to use the IP address of the interface as a default gateway, and this would reduce the broadcast domain. I have not been successful in locating configuration examples. Can someone point me in a direction?

Thank you, Carl D.

Having 600 layer 3 interfaces is not a very good idea. Why don't you segment your network to multiple VLANs instead to reduce your broadcast domain? You can create layer 3 VLAN interfaces to route between VLANs. You should be able to find config guidelines on CCO at

I agree with the other guys comment. Simply segment your network out say based on departmental and use your L3 blade to route between the subnets. Also be sure to NOT use VLAN1 for "normal" data traffic. By "normal" I mean everyday traffic. Use VLAN1 for switch/router management traffic only and NOTHING else.
