I assume you are talking about User Tracking. But if you are not aware, that is the sole function you are looking for. Here is the troubleshooting doc on UT.

Second the motion on using User Tracking (UT).

Be advised that if you want to ascertain the user's logon name, you'll need to integrate Cisco's provided utlite.exe utility into your domain controller(s) and user logon scripts to populate UT's db field with the user name.

See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/sw/cscowork/ps563/products_configuration_example09186a00801a9ff6.shtml for details.

If you don't use UTLite, you'll get everything except the user name. Some folks use alternate methods to get the user name mapped to, say an IP address (using nbtstat.exe built into Windows, for example) and then plug the IP address into a UT query.

Dear All,

Many thnx for ur help....but the problem in user tracking, i got some users (mac add, ip add , hostname) and other users only (mac address)..

why it only shows mac addresses. i need full info about user (mac, ip add, hostname).

is the problem that i don't have VLans or Layer 3 switching?

should i have Layer3 switching first enabled and vlans on the core switch?

thnx.

The User tracking uses the switch to gain the mac address, it then queries all the routers in the ANI database for ARP information to get the Mac address to IP mapping, then it performs a reverse lookup on the IP address to get the hostname.

In your case, are all the routers for the network Cisco and managed via Cisco Works? If so, is it possible that the mac address in question does not have an IP bound to it? This is often the case when you use NIC redundancy in a load balancing or failover capacity. The OS on the machine creates an additional mac address for the virtual single NIC and both of the NICs real macs may show up in user tracking with no IP.

If you find one of these devices, make sure that its default gateway is Cisco and in Campus Manager and that it has IP bound to it. If you find out that it was a different issue, let us know!

Good Luck,

Carlo
