runts and gaints

Hi,

What is the significance of the runts and gaints field shown in the show interface command. where it is used ? Any link on cisco website ?

Hi,

Runts are frames received that are smaller than the minimum IEEE 802.3 frame size (64 bytes for Ethernet), and with a bad CRC.

Giants are frames received that exceed the maximum IEEE 802.3 frame size (1518 bytes for non-jumbo Ethernet) and have a bad Frame Check Sequence (FCS).

If you're seeing runts and giants on the same interface, it's typically going to be a bad interface/NIC or cabling issue.

90% of the time when I see runts and giants on an Ethernet interface, its a speed/duplex mismatch (i.e., one side is usually auto/auto and the other side is hard-set 100/full)
