7606-S with RSP720-3CXL-10GE and WS-X6748-GE-TX. DFC card needed or not?

Hi,

we want to buy this router with the RSP in the title. Additionally an ethernet module is needed too, but I am not sure what DFC card I should take.

It would be great if I don't need to expend more money for the DFC cards.

I can choose between these DFC cards:

WS-F6700-CFC

Catalyst 6500 Central Fwd Card for WS-X67xx modules

WS-F6700-DFC3B

Catalyst 6500 Dist Fwd Card, 256K Routes for WS-X67xx

WS-F6700-DFC3BXL

Catalyst 6500 Dist Fwd Card- 3BXL, for WS-X67xx

WS-F6700-DFC3C

Catalyst 6500 Dist Fwd Card for WS-X67xx modules

WS-F6700-DFC3CXL

Catalyst 6500 Dist Fwd Card- 3CXL, for WS-X67xx

What if I take the first one that does not cost anything (WS-F6700-CFC)?

Will the configuration work and if yes, at what speed?

And what about the memory options? I can choose between these:

MEM-XCEF720-256M

Catalyst 6500 256MB DDR, xCEF720 (67xx interface, DFC3A)

MEM-XCEF720-512M

Cat 6500 512MB DDR, xCEF720 (67xx interface, DFC3A/DFC3B)

MEM-XCEF720-1GB

Catalyst 6500 1GB DDR, xCEF720 (67xx interface, DFC3BXL)

Looks like that I have to take the appropriate memory for a corresponding DFC, am I right?

To summarize:

If I take a 7606-S with, RSP720-3CXL-10GE, one 10GE X2 module, one GE SFP copper and one

WS-X6748-GE-TX ethernet module, without chossing any DFC and memory options, will my configuration work?

I hope that someone will clarify this for me.

No, it will not work you need to install a DFC or a CFC module to use the WS-6748 module because it can only connect to the 720 Gbps switching fabric.

This is different from older modules that had also a connection to the 32 Gbps shared bus.

With a CFC, your card is "dumb".  Forwarding decisions are made by the supervisor.  I believe the RSP720, is like the SUP720, and offers up to 30 Mpps for fabric enabled cards.  (15 Mpps for non-fabric cards.)  The 30 Mpps is for the whole chassis.  (30 Mpps provides about 20 Gbps, wire-rate, simplex, Ethernet.)

If I remember correctly, the DFCs for the 67xx line cards provide 48 Mpps; this for just that card.

Whether you need a DFC or not depends on your expected traffic load.  (NB: BTW, line-rate is worst case, often much less PPS is needed for real-world traffic.)

As to which version of a DFC to choose, the general rule is to match the supervisor.  However, some mixing and matching (at least on the 6500 - 7600?) is supported, but you can loose some features.

We will go now with RSP720-3CXL-10GE, one WS-X6748-GE-TX, CFC and MEM-XCEF720-256M.

This router will be the internet gateway with a link with maybe 3-4 Gb/s. The 10G port on the RSP will be used.

On the ethernet module will be some CMTS-s, servers etc connected.

I hope that this config will work.

If I also remember correctly, believe on that 6700 card, DFC can be added later, if needed.

I'd wait until mid-July 2011 when the new VS-Sup2T comes out.

The reason why I recommend WAIT is because there's a new DFC/PFC card out, version 4 (DFC4/PFC4).

I found it only in the configuration tool but I can not find any data sheets.

Officially the data sheet won't be out until mid-July 2011.  Otherwise you can look at the PDF file I've attached.  The PDF is suppose to be an internal (and Confidential) Cisco document suppose to be given to their resellers but I have no idea why it was posted in the internet.

Can i pair rsp720 with integrated switch fabric /3cxl-ge with ws-x6848-ge-tx?

It says "unsupported module in slot 7 power not allowed unknown card type..
