I've been run in circles by a certain support organziation on this simple question. Please advise if there's an accurate response available to my question, as they cannot answer my question. Here it is:
Is a seperate license needed for the protocol pack on the 887VA? If so, which one?
A support represenative told me the 887VA is a "fixed" license and cannot have a Data license applied to it. If that's true, then why is there a protocol pack available for this platform?
Another support represenative told me it was not needed, so I downloaded the protocol pack which matches the ios version, and I applied the pack using this command...
887VA(config)# ip nbar protocol-pack flash:pp-adv-isrg2-153-1.T-3.1.0.pack
...it hangs the router so that a hard reset is the only way to recover.
Is that because a license is needed? If so, which one?
If I knew which license was needed I could purchase it.
Thanks.

Ciao,
If you want to know what is on your 887va just issue the show license feature command and you will realise what is in your device. Btw, this licensing that Cisco put in place refers to the IOS software and not to a particular platform. You can run IOS 15.x also on 1800 series!!!

What did help is a solid TAC engineer figured out it doesn't hang the router, it just takes 30 minutes or longer for the command to complete and that no extra license is required on this platform for the protocol pack.
Case closed.

That is incorrect. Licensing depends by the platform, eg ISR G1 do not have licesning enforced, while ISR G2

Ciao Paolo,
I guess you would be right if it were not possible to install IOS 15.X and license on a 2800 series as instead I did.
Your statement possibly meant something else.

It means exactly what I said.
No license files are needed on 2800 with 15.x, check yourself.
