I have a Cisco 837 router and I want to backup the config our TFTP server, what command do I need to use please? What I want to achieve is backup the configure, then change the configuration of the router so it doesn't work properly, then restore the backup.

For the current configuration in RAM
copy runnning-config tftp
For the stored configuration in NVRAM
copy startup-config tftp
If you want to restore the configuration from TFTP server
copy tftp startup-config
Use the reload command to reboot the router and use the configuration copied to NVRAM.

If the router is on the same IP range as the TFTP server I can do this, but if it's on a different IP range I can't, however I can ping the TFTP server from the router and there is no firewall inbetween.

try "copy start tftp://
Hope this helps,
