Backup path when MPLS fails.

Hello All,

we are currently using IPVPN( sitetosite vpn) to connect to our client network in remote location and now we have migrated to new MPLS network but we like to retain our vpn connection as a backup link incase of MPLS network failure ,can someone suggest how this can be achieved with IPSLA.

Hi,

Is there a particular reason you want to use IPSLA? Typically in this environment you would use HSRP / VRRP between your two routers with the MPLS as master under normal operation. Inbound routing would be controlled by dynamic routing protocols (BGP over the MPLS, something else such as RIP, EIGRP, OSPF over the VPN).

what if we have single router with dual backup links one for MPLS and the other for StoS VPN ?

Here IPVPN and MPLS are interchangable i mean to say S2S VPN.

With a single router all that changes is that you don't need HSRP any more. You would just control inbound and outbound routing via the appropriate routing protocol. Again, the common way to do this is to run BGP on your MPLS connection and some other routing protocol over the VPN (EIGRP / OSPF etc.). If the BGP routes are present they will be favoured over the VPN learned routes.
