Best Practice to 7206 IOS Upgrade

I am planning to upgrade 7206 router currently running a very old version of IOS. I have git an ATM interface that connected to the internet..This router load the IOS from an 8MB flash from slot. What is teh best practice to upgrade it with less down time..

Below is the sh version

cisco 7206 (NPE150) processor with 122880K/8192K bytes of memory.

4 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interfaces.

2 FastEthernet/IEEE 802.3 interfaces.

1 ATM network interface.

125K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.

1024K bytes of packet SRAM memory.

8192K bytes of Flash PCMCIA card at slot 0 (Sector size 128K).

4096K bytes of Flash internal SIMM (Sector size 256K).

Configuration register is 0x102

First of all, check that the router meets the RAM memory requirements for your new release.

Use a different flash card for the new image. You can then always use your current one as a fallback when the upgrade fails.
