Cisco 4321 Smart Licensing

hi,

i got a 4321 router that i activated for temporary/eval license. we upgraded it to 16.12.4 and saw smart license started 16.9.x

i would need the 'throughput' and CME/uck9 permanent license installed. but the vendor gave us the traditional PAK/PDF for uck9 license.

can someone advise how to "convert" the 'traditional' uck9 license? do we downgrade the IOS-XE to run the 'license instal'' or is this done via the smart license portal?

i would also appreciate if someone can give the steps in registering the 4k router in smart portal? do i just generate a token? does the 4321 needs to be configured for DNS and internet reachability for call home to work?

is the 'boost' license included/free with the 4Krouter? TAC included the boost together with the UC license. was wondering if it was 'bundled.'

Boost licenses are sold separately. Check out the datasheet for Part number:

Cisco 4000 Family Integrated Services Router Data Sheet - Cisco

You may have ordered it along with your 4321 purchase.

also, does the 4321 need constant internet to call the home server/license portal?

I would say "Yes" router needs internet access but not constant. If you see the output clearly you will see the next communication attempt will initiate by the router to get license authorization.

Hi @johnlloyd_13,

You can convert them easily by using few simple steps. Here is the link to convert the classic licenses to smart licenses.

hi,

i was able to register the 4321 to call home server. there seem to be a problem with the UCK9 license.

will probably just contact license TAC for this.

i also notice the throughput/boost license was 'out of compliance'.

what's the process of ordering, what's the SKU/part and how to add the 'boost' license?

EDIT - TAC just manually updated my Smart License Portal. Both 'boost' and 'UC' had a count of 1 under 'purchased' and 'in-use'

the router still showing 'out-of-compliance'. is there a way to force update the router to talk to call home server?

hi,

i managed to "force update" the licenses using the 'license smart register idtoken <TOKEN> force' privilege command.

is the 'boost' license included/free with the 4Krouter? TAC included the boost together with the UC license. was wondering if it was 'bundled.'

also, does the 4321 needs a constant internet to call home server/license portal?

or can this be done one time, i.e. during initial config on the router, connect it to internet before rack mounting.
