Cisco 837 router does not connect to ADSL.

Hello! Here again, being one of those annoying people coming with legacy devices that don’t work.

This time, I managed to access my Cisco 837 using a Windows 98 VM. Only problem is, when trying to enter my ADSL username and password (and VPI/VCI) but I get the following error:

Win98 [Running] 2022-01-19 21-41-28.png

Workarounds/Tests/Info:

  • The DSL cable is connected and works ok with my other router.
  • The only information I do not know for sure, is the VPI/VCI, I got it from a forum for my ISP.
  • I have reset the router to factory defaults.

Is there a way to read more detailed logs? Might be the ADSL port broken? I’m at loss 🤷🏻‍

Any help or tips are much appreciated!

Hello,

I am not sure what debug commands are available exactly on that router, but try and enable the below:

debug atm arp
debug atm counters
debug atm errors
debug atm events
debug atm oam
debug atm packet
debug atm state

then shut/no shut the ATM interface, and post the output. Something we can work with might show up...

Hello @Georg Pauwen , and thanks for your patience!

Here:

cisco837#debug atm arp
ATM ARP events debugging is on
cisco837#debug atm counters
ATM counters debugging is on
cisco837#debug atm errors
ATM errors debugging is on
cisco837#debug atm events
ATM events debugging is on
cisco837#debug atm oam
ATM OAM cells debugging is on
Displaying all ATM oam data
cisco837#debug atm packet
ATM packets debugging is on
Displaying all ATM packets
cisco837#debug atm state
ATM VC States debugging is on

And no output at all after shutting down and re-enabling the ATM interface (and/or the controller) ?

Sorry @Georg Pauwen ! I seem to have hit Send by mistake  whilst I was still performing the tests.

This is a chunk of the debug output (not sure if it gets redirected to a file).

Hello,

the output is useful. Try and change the dsl operating mode, it is currently set to:

dsl operating-mode auto

Check what options are available:

dsl operating-mode ?

And toggle these optons. After changing the option, physically remove and reattach the cable to the router.

Thanks @Georg Pauwen , I tried all these, and after setting the option, I removed and reattached the rj11 ADSL cable, these are the results:

Taking into accout that my running config shows:

interface Dialer1
 ip address negotiated
ip mtu 1492 ip nat outside
 ip inspect myfw out
 ip virtual-reassembly
 encapsulation ppp
 ip tcp adjust-mss 1452 dialer pool 1
 dialer remote-name redback

 ppp authentication pap chap callin
 ppp chap hostname 9720461000

 ppp pap sent-username 9720461000 password 7 1215070007130B1539
 ppp ipcp dns request
 ppp ipcp wins request

Should I perhaps play around with the mtu’s? Or maybe it’s because it has the no modem enable option?

Hello,

what are your options after:

pvc 0/38
encapsulation ?

One of them is probably 'encapsulation aal5mux ppp dialer'.

Try to toggle the different options.

Thanks @Georg Pauwen , I first negated the previous PVC of 8/35, and then proceeded to load 0/38 and set encapsulation aal5mux ppp dialer . Removed DSL cable and reattached, no success:

(Note: Tested all other alternaties, didn’t make any difference)

Well, at least the CRC error is gone. Have you tried all different VPC combinations/dsl operating modes/encapsulations ?

Hello @Georg Pauwen ! I did try all different VPC combinations.

I’m honestly at loss. I wonder.. is there a way to wipe everything out and load a template config?

Is you DSL line actually trained up, if you isse the command "show controller adsl0" and then look at the modem state, it should say "Showtime" once it's trained up (and you'll see the modem train-rates up/down and all the line stats).   If you are not trained up correctly against the DSLAM then all other config-checks are probably not worth the hassle.

There used to be specific DSL firmware versions that were needed for compatibility with various DSLAM vendors and these were available from the software download site on CCO, but those 837's are so old now that I would be surprised if there is still a link available for you to grab the latest image............if you take the last available IOS version for the c837 then the embedded DSL firmware within that should be pretty close to the latest available.

PS: do you think an 887VA-W would work with DSL? I’m looking into playing with Zabbix and maybe dipping my toes in a CCENT. Also need a robust yet affordable router for the home.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/800-series-routers/data_sheet_c78-613481.html

You need to check with provider what they support ADSL / VDSL then based on that decide what model you can buy

Cisco 887VA

Multimode VDSL2/
ADSL2 and 2+ over basic telephone service

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

Hello,

this post is a bit old, so I don't fully recall whay you already tried. Do you have access to the command line, and if so, can you post the output of:

sh run

Hello again @Georg Pauwen , yes and I apologise for the delay! The day of the last post I became a dad, so it’s been a bit hectic for me at home, but overall I didn´t want to let this pass by, mostly because you helped so much, I didn’t want all that help and support go to waste!

Here’s the output of sh run:
