UPDATE: After lots of googling, found how to send a break to the screen command (that seems to be the issue)

Here: https://etherealmind.com/osx-serial-console-break/

You need to ctrl + a to focus on the screen command again, and then ctrl + b to send the break.

That worked.

thanks anyway! And I hope this helps anyone with Macintoshes!

Hello everyone! I recently got a Cisco 837 router, and am having some issues accessing the IOS through console port.

I am pretty sure issue is the terminal settings, but I tried several options with no results.

Hardware:

Macbook Retina 2016 with Catalina

Cisco 837 connected with USB to Serial adapter, to a USB type C dongle.

Software:

Default terminal that comes with OSCatalina. (Term set as xterm-256 color, tried with vt100, if that makes any difference, also tried setting -UO on screen command)

Problem description:

If I screen /dev/tty.usbserial-14120 9600 into the router, I get this login screen:

pgrz117 con0 is now available

Press RETURNCCCC
NAME: PGRZ117

User Access Verification

Password:

"cisco" does not work as the password (neither does "password" or any other obvious variant).

So I dug a little bit up in this Community (and some other parts of the intewebs) and found many options to try, however, none of them seem to work with my setup:

Attempted workarounds:

  1. I followed these threads in order to attempt to enter rommon mode, didn’t work: https://community.cisco.com/t5/routing/lost-password-871w/td-p/642397
    https://community.cisco.com/t5/routing/asr1002-factory-reset-or-password/td-p/3786156
(I tried setting my terminal to 300 and 1200 bauds, as described on the thread, no work)
  2. I followed this guide: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/access/4400/troubleshooting/guide/isr4400trbl/isr4400trbl02.html
Didn’t because I cannot bypass the password prompt.
  3. I also attempted all the different bauds on this reference page: https://www.cisco.com/assets/sol/sb/Switches_Emulators_v2_3_5_xx/help/350_550/index.html#page/tesla_350_550_olh/autobaud.html
  4. I tried a low baud speed and pressing space bar for 15 seconds and over.
  5. I tried with regular and low baud speed  and pressing Command + b , did not work.
  6. I tried with control + z and control + c, no interrupt.
  7. I also tried steps on https://community.cisco.com/t5/routing/forgot-password/td-p/4155860.
  8. I tried booting with 300 bauds and then reattaching with 9600 bauds.

So as you can appreciate, I’m a bit at loss here. So, my question is:

Is there anyone out there, with experience in connecting through console port with a Mac based computer? Sadly, I don’t have any other computer, and it’s the one I usually carry, so I would like to master the art of connecting to these devices with it.

If there is any other info I can provide, I would be happy to do so.

Thanks a lot in advance guys, I know your time is valuable so I’ll try to waste as little of it as I can!
