difference between administrative mode & operational mode in switch

Can anybody illustrate the difference between administrative mode & operational mode in cisco 3560/3550 ?

Not sure what you mean by admin and operational mode, but here are all different modes, when you login to a router or switch

User EXEC Mode

•Privileged EXEC Mode

•Global Configuration Mode

•Interface Configuration Mode

•Subinterface Configuration Mode

•ROM Monitor Mode

My question was different

Kindly see the attached image of O/P on 2 switches, in one SW the Operational mode is down, and in other is trunk, just wonder why we have two state and what the difference!

Hi,

administrative mode is what's configured on the switch port, like to negotiate trunking.

Operational mode is the actual status (result of interaction with the device connected to the port), like trunk with ISL or 802.1Q encapsulation.

That's exactly what I would think, but how do you explain the situation where you have "Administrative Mode: dynamic auto" and Operational Mode: static access"? The term "static" implies that it has been set manually. Is it that the negotiation of access mode is considered static after the fact?

static access means the PVID was not obtained dynamically   from a  VMPS server.

"# show interfaces switchport" command gives output of each and every port in the switch. For every switch port there are Two modes, which are Administrative Mode and Operational mode. 

Administrative Mode: This mode denotes what we configure onto that particular port.. like Trunk or Access or LaGP or PaGP or ON and Administrative encapsulation etc...

Operational Mode: This mode is what a switch-port behaves in response to the configuration done onto a particular port.

For example.. if we configure Trunk on one switch port and on the other end on another switch, if we configure access.. how it behaves.. though it's configured as trunk, it doesn't work as a trunk. Here the "Administrative" mode is "Trunk".. but "Operational" mode is "Access".

These configurations are set for trunking.

The operational mode is the interface mode, it can be access or trunk. it is use when DTP is disabled by switchport mode trunk no negotiate. it can be only access or trunk.

The administrative mode is used when DTP is enabled ( it is enbled by default). It can have one of these four values: access, trunk, dynamic desirable and dynamic auto which is the default value.

The administrative
