How to register my switch

you could buy a service contract, but they are quite expensive, probably a lot more than you paid for the switch. Which model did you get ?

I got the WS-C3560-48PS-S. That would suck if that is what's stopping me. You shouldn't need to have a service contract to upgrade.

just download it from internet (torrent it) not like you're deploying it into a live corporate environment.

Everything is about authentic devices with a Cisco branded label. The way to control it is to force the purchase of the product from an approved reseller and to purchase a service contract, which allows download of IOS. It also controls locations for certain code, too.
