identifying traffic/protocol

pls i need to identify he type of traffic running in my network, so i can apply policy. is a bank branch,that uses one application for posing of bank transaction,and they send mails too. do you have idea of the name of the posting appication and that of email. also where can i get a comprehensive name of traffic

You can also make use of third party softwares like netflow tracker so that you can export the details from your router to the tracker server and manage different kinda reports based on your requirement.

you can check out the transactions based on the protocol, ip address pair etc.,
