Ignored packets are on the router

Hi,

I need a help ! its urgent,

I have OSPF Network that include 10 Cisco Routers 7200, suddenly The OSPF adjacency between the routers flapped and it gives Log: Too Many Re transmission OSPF Packets.

After Deep Investigation I found that There is on all interfaces of all Routers has Ignored Packets which is equal to Input errors,

for Example :

Router#sho inter gigabitEthernet 0/2
GigabitEthernet0/2 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is MV64460 Internal MAC, address is 0006.52f1.2c1a (bia 0006.52f1.2c1a)
Description:
MTU 9000 bytes, BW 1000000 Kbit/sec, DLY 10 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 184/255
Encapsulation 802.1Q Virtual LAN, Vlan ID 1., loopback not set
Keepalive set (10 sec)
Full Duplex, 1Gbps, media type is RJ45
output flow-control is XON, input flow-control is unsupported
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input 00:00:00, output 00:00:01, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters 00:40:09
Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
Queueing strategy: fifo
Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)
5 minute input rate 723797000 bits/sec, 70051 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
163377306 packets input, 397567366 bytes, 0 no buffer
Received 1421 broadcasts (0 IP multicasts)
0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
78721 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 78721 ignored
0 watchdog, 3830 multicast, 0 pause input
1390 packets output, 119084 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 0 interface resets
80 unknown protocol drops
0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 pause output
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

I've checked the MTU size on whole paths, there are all compitable and equal to each other, even on L2 Devices, So I don't think the problem from MTU Value.

Regards

Problem is resolved by replacing the routers to higher series ASR1000

Thanks everybody

I am a bit puzzled. You are showing us output about a physical interface. But its encapsulation looks like it is trunking

Encapsulation 802.1Q Virtual LAN, Vlan ID 1

Could you post the config of this interface and of the interface on the device it connects to on this interface?

Yes, Its encapsulated and its connected with Trunk Port on Switch and then to another Router.

there is a subinterface, I'll show you configuration of it

here is the interface on Router:

Router:

interface GigabitEthernet0/2
mtu 9000
no ip address
ip access-group 150 in
ip mtu 1500
duplex full
speed 1000
media-type rj45
negotiation auto
mpls mtu 1532
mpls ip
end

interface GigabitEthernet0/2.135
encapsulation dot1Q 135
ip address x.x.x.x 255.255.255.252
ip ospf authentication message-digest
ip ospf message-digest-key 1 md5 7 0526260B001D6E5A5D463753
ip ospf mtu-ignore
ip ospf 10 area 0
mpls ip
end

here is the Switch interface Status and configuration :

interface GigabitEthernet0/28
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 135
switchport mode trunk
end

GigabitEthernet0/28 is down, line protocol is down (notconnect)
Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is 0014.6a11.779c (bia 0014.6a11.779c)
MTU 9000 bytes, BW 1000000 Kbit, DLY 10 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
Keepalive not set
Auto-duplex, Auto-speed, link type is auto, media type is Not Present
input flow-control is off, output flow-control is unsupported
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input never, output 15w0d, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters 22w3d
Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
Queueing strategy: fifo
Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)
5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
610 packets input, 59789 bytes, 0 no buffer
Received 413 broadcasts (406 multicasts)
0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored
0 watchdog, 406 multicast, 0 pause input
0 input packets with dribble condition detected
6971352 packets output, 9100422141 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 5 interface resets
0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier, 0 PAUSE output
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

What has changed that stopped things from working? In my opinion things dont break spontaneously.

Please remember to rate useful posts, by clicking on the stars below.

There is nothing changed, but My Network get bigger and bigger, so there is huge flood of packets between the routers, so the routers cannot handle this huge traffic, so I guess thats why the OSPF flapped and Other Protocols, and thats why there is ignored packets on interfaces of the routers.

I read some articles, and their solutions was :

1- Change the routers to bigger ones.

2- adjusting the Buffers of Routers.

It is probably true that the network has grown a lot and that there is much more traffic. But that is not the cause of this issue. A very interesting part of one of the previous posts was this

GigabitEthernet0/28 is down, line protocol is down (notconnect)

so the switch believes that the interface is down and is not connected while the router believes that the interface is up. I believe that resolving this will be key to solving the problem described in this discussion. Is it possible that there has been some change in cabling and that the router is no longer connected where you think it is connected? Is there some other reason why the router says up while the switch says down?

Hi,

Am really Sorry, I have posted an old interface.

here is the correct one:

interface GigabitEthernet0/24
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 135,139
switchport mode trunk
end

Switch#sho inter GigabitEthernet0/24
GigabitEthernet0/24 is up, line protocol is up (connected)
Hardware is Gigabit Ethernet, address is 0014.6a11.7798 (bia 0014.6a11.7798)
Description: Connection to Router Gi0/2
MTU 9000 bytes, BW 1000000 Kbit, DLY 10 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 47/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
Keepalive set (10 sec)
Full-duplex, 1000Mb/s, media type is 10/100/1000BaseTX
input flow-control is off, output flow-control is unsupported
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input 23w3d, output 00:00:00, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters 22w4d
Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
