Loop on atm interface

Hi all
1. If I place a loop on a router by configuring loopback line at the interface config at the router. What problem am i trying to isolate. ? Where is it looping from ?
2. May i know what type of interface can i create a software loop on.
3. Can i create a soft loop on a serial interface using IOS command ?

1. actually, not much. You are just proving that the looping hardware at the interface is working as expected and this happens in 99.9% of the times.
2. mainly T1 and E1, and some type of serial interface.
3. see above, configure either at controller or interface level.

You can do soft loop by using modem DIP switch settings.
As of your que. Answer you can use LOOPBACK command under interface configuration mode..
But you need to really understand to other parameter also and debug commands also. so, you can analyze proper problem area.
