Port turns amber after unbind portchannel.

Hi guys,

We have one cisco core switch 6500 series which was configured portchannel on several gig interfaces. This port is used as a trunk to enable communication between VLANs. The VLANs is where several high-end servers/hosts reside.

After we disable / unbind the portchannel, the port turns amber. The following is what we did on the interface

1- #no switchport command

2- make the port as access mode

  #switchport mode access

3- shut and no shut

4- clear arp

5- clear mac

....

what else can we do on that particular interface. It is just on that particular interface, the rest are ok.

Hello Yusof,

An amber port usually designates a port that has been put to blocking state by some control plane protocol or a decision of the switch that the port may not remain in forwarding state. We have to find out why the switch decided to do so.

When the port is amber, can you issue the following commands and post the output here?

show interface X switchport

show interface X status

show spanning-tree interface X

Substitute X with the name/number of the switchport. Thank you!

I will try then, btw what you expect the result would be from the show command? and what is the expected remedy?

To be honest, I am not sure what I am looking for If I knew that I would immediately suggest a few things to check and correct. I know only that this behavior is not correct and I am looking for any clues that may point me in the correct direction.

By the way, it would also be helpful to see the configuration of the port itself. Thanks!

Hello Yusof,

Well, the port seems to be simply shutdown - according to the show interfaces output, the port is "administratively down". Can you try using no shutdown or perhaps a sequence of shutdown, wait a few seconds, no shutdown on the port?

On many platforms (not sure if all Catalysts behave in the same way though), when you remove a physical port from an EtherChannel, the switch automatically shuts it down. This is done to prevent switching loops from occuring that could otherwise be created if ports are unbundled on one end of the EtherChannel and still bundled at the other. You should simply start the port again using the no shutdown after the corresponding port on the neighboring switch has also been removed from the EtherChannel bundle.

While it is somewhat untypical for me for a shutdown port to be actually lit amber (most Catalyst I work with leave the port LED dark if the port is shutdown), I guess this is the simplest explanation of what is happening. I vaguely recall that somebody made me aware that some higher Catalyst platforms actually leave the port LEDs amber even if the port is shut down (but that's a very faint memory and I am not 100% sure about that).
