"boot the first valid file" not working

Petr Nyvlt
Level 1
Level 1

Hello,

I have an issue with router 4321.

I set the "boot system" variable to load specific file on boot:

Router#sh bootvar
BOOT variable = bootflash:/isr4300-universalk9.03.16.06b.S.155-3.S6b-ext.SPA.bin,12;
CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist
BOOTLDR variable does not exist
Configuration register is 0x2102

Standby not ready to show bootvar

The path is set correctly, it works fine when the file is present in the bootflash.

But I can't find solution to solve situation when this specified file is missing in the bootflash, but there is another valid image present.

Directory of bootflash:/

15 -rw- 489931744 Nov 23 2017 23:06:34 +01:00 isr4300-universalk9.03.16.06.S.155-3.S6-ext.SPA.bin

According to this  Manual

  - If all boot commands in the system configuration file specify booting from a network server and all  commands fail, the system attempts to boot the first valid file in Flash memory.

But this never happened in my case. The router try to load the specified image and then reboot itself immediately:

Can you try a different IOS version?

You mean to load another "alternate image" on the bootflash?

Yes, I can try that, but I am sure that this one is OK. When I break the boot to rommon and boot manually it works fine.

Can you post the complete output to the following commands:

2.  sh run | i boot

3.  sh version

These are the outputs:

I have cleared all configuration except the boot command that points to non-existing image.

The router keeps restarting.

Hi Lee,

I have left the router to reloads repeatedly and it finally booted the first image on the flash:

I guess the number 12 in the bootvar parameter is number of retries before it proceed to search for another image.

Router#sh bootvar
BOOT variable = bootflash:/isr4300-universalk9.03.16.06b.S.155-3.S6b-ext.SPA.bin,12;
CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist
BOOTLDR variable does not exist
Configuration register is 0x2102

Is there option to reduce this number of retries?

I can't find this option in documentation.

Can you try changing the config-registry value to 0x2101?

Changing the configuration register does not fix that.

I made some tests and found out that this is ROMMON dependent behavior.

For System Bootstrap, Version 16.2(2r) that comes with "clock issue fixed" routers 4321

the ROMMON tries to boot the specified image 12 times, according to number set in the end of  BOOT variable:
BOOT variable = bootflash:/isr4300-universalk9.03.16.03.S.155-3.S3-ext.SPA.bin,12;

This lead to 12 reloads before router tries to search for another image in bootflash:

The old routers with "clock issue" came with  System Bootstrap, Version 15.4(3r)S5.

This version check the specified image only one time and then boot with first image available.

Unfortunately I did not find the way how to change the default number of retries (12) in the boot variable. The router boots in the end with some valid image from the booflash, but it takes quite a long time.

I'd raise a TAC Case. This is a strange issue.

Pls chk   sh run | i boot

boot system flash bootflash:isr4300-universalk9.03.13.08.S.154-3.S8-ext.SPA.bin

...was the solution for me.  I had a continual boot loop because I had incorrectly formatted the boot statement (in red), so I removed that and added the correct one (in green):

boot-start-marker
boot system flash:isr4300-universalk9.16.12.04.SPA.bin
boot system flash:isr4300-universalk9.16.06.04.SPA.bin
boot system flash:
boot-end-marker

Dear,

Check the IOS not got corrupted by checking MD5 value

show platform make sure all firmware matches

Boot system bootflash: .bin

I got same error after fixing this the issue got resolved.

Hello

The most simplistic solution i guess would to revert the boot variable to 0x2101 and then

state both ios bin files in bootvar with the primary IOS stated first.

Hi,

1. Boot to rommon.

2. Type 'unset BOOT'

3. Save the changes to nvram using the 'sync' command

4. Type 'reset' to reboot the system

Hope this helps.
